I was given to my mom in Sept of 2001 by her neighbor who got me from one of his friends. I was sick and they did not want to take care of me. A few days after I was with mom she took me 150 miles away from home to a special wildlife vet, because I could not even crawl or stand up. I was getting worse even with moms care. My one leg was bent backwards and my foot was upside down and I had severe diarrhea and nothing helped. This very nice animal doctor gave me physical and ex-rayed my bones. He said I have Metobolic bone disease and had a 50/50 chance of living. He gave me some shots and some medicine to take home. This is a very bad disorder for a squirrel and can be fatal. It is caused by improper feeding. I was fed cows milk instead of the proper replacement formula for baby animals like me. Now I will be handicaped forever. I can never be free or run thru the trees or have babies or do any of the things a normal squirrel would do. Don't get me wrong I love living with my mom. She takes extra special care of me. I get special vitamins and calcium and zupream primate biscuits(these are the very best food for squirrels) and a special cage that is safe for my foot becuase I keep getting it cought. I also am allowed to go out doors in mom's big pen where I can be in the sunshine. I love it out there and spend lots of time out there talking to the wild squirrels.I also get lots and lots of loving. I like that best. I am thankful to the people who saved my life but I wish they had taken the time to learn how to feed a baby squirrel or given me to someone who did. When I came to mom I had very bad diarrhea and food just went right thru . I could not digest anything. I finally had to end up eating just baby food and the zupream biscuits. Neither of my front legs worked and my back foot is upside down. Mom worked with me and now I can use both my front legs and get around. It took me a long time to learn to sit up and even longer time to walk. I'm also very small for my age. Only 220 grams at 1 year old.

The squirrel I have chosen for the border is "Squirrel Nutkin" by Beatrix Potter. It is said he danced on sunbeams and if she could that is exactly what she would do. Liberty is a free spirit. |
